건축가에게는 언젠가 꼭 한 번 살아보고 싶은 집이 있다. 설해원하우스 더 가든은 그런 생각에서 시작되었다. 언젠가 나 역시 며칠 동안 아무 일도 하지 않고 머물고 싶은 한옥. 그 상상이 조금씩 건축이 되었다.

우리가 그리고 싶었던 것은 과거의 한옥이 아니었다. 한옥이 오랫동안 사람들에게 편안했던 이유였다. 마당을 중심으로 방과 거실이 이어지고, 담장을 따라 걷다 보면 풍경이 조금씩 열리는 공간. 서두르지 않는 동선과 자연을 가까이 두는 생활 방식. 그 감각을 오늘의 건축으로 다시 풀어보고 싶었다.

설계는 중정을 중심으로 시작되었다. 실내와 실외는 명확하게 나뉘지 않는다. 거실은 마당으로 이어지고 테라스는 다시 풍경으로 이어진다. 약 40평 규모의 단층 주택이지만 공간은 그보다 훨씬 깊게 느껴진다. 건축은 처음부터 자신을 모두 드러내지 않는다. 대문을 지나고, 담장을 따라 걷고, 중정을 마주하면서 공간은 조금씩 모습을 보여준다. 걸음에 따라 풍경이 바뀌고 머무는 시간에 따라 집의 표정도 달라진다. 한옥이 오랫동안 사랑받았던 이유는 형태보다 순서에 있었는지도 모른다.

설해원하우스 더 가든은 설해원이 추구해 온 '모던네이처(Modern Nature)'를 가장 한국적인 방식으로 풀어낸 집이다. 시간이 흐르면서 이곳은 예상보다 많은 사람들의 사랑을 받기 시작했다. 조용히 쉬고 싶은 사람들이 먼저 이 집을 찾는다. 돌아보면 좋은 집은 그 안에서 보낸 하루로 기억된다. 우리는 그런 하루를 담을 수 있는 집을 만들고 싶었다.

Every architect carries the image of a house they hope to live in one day. Seolhaewon House The Garden began with that personal thought. A contemporary hanok where one could spend a few quiet days, doing nothing in particular, simply enjoying the passing of time. That image gradually became architecture.

Our interest was never in recreating the hanok itself. It was in understanding why it has remained so comfortable for generations. The courtyard. The sequence of rooms. The slow transition between inside and outside. The quiet relationship between architecture and nature. These qualities became the foundation of the project.

The house is organized around a central courtyard where living spaces, terraces, and the surrounding landscape are gently connected.Although the residence occupies only about 40 pyeong, the layered relationship between interior and exterior creates a feeling of remarkable spatial generosity. The architecture never reveals itself all at once. Passing through the entrance gate, walking beside the walls, and arriving at the courtyard become part of the experience. As each space unfolds, the house reveals another layer of light, landscape, and stillness. Perhaps the enduring value of the traditional hanok lies not in its appearance, but in the way it guides people through space.

Seolhaewon House The Garden interprets that idea through the contemporary philosophy of Modern Nature. Over time, it has quietly become one of the most beloved places within Seolhaewon. People do not come here because it is large or extravagant. They come because it offers something increasingly rare. A place where time feels slower. Looking back, memorable houses are rarely defined by their size. They are remembered by the days people spend within them. That was the house we hoped to create.
