헤이리 더 스텝은 파주 헤이리 예술마을 안에 흩어져 있던 네 개의 대지를 하나의 흐름으로 엮어낸 프로젝트다. 건물을 하나 더 세우는 일보다 서로 떨어져 있던 장소들이 하나의 마을처럼 이어지게 하는 일이 더 중요했다.

헤이리는 오랫동안 예술가와 건축가가 함께 만들어온 공간이다. 그래서 이곳의 건축은 스스로를 과시하기보다 주변과 어떻게 관계를 맺는지가 더 중요하다고 생각했다. 프로젝트는 이러한 장소성을 존중하며 각각의 건물이 독립성을 유지하면서도 하나의 풍경 안에서 읽히도록 계획되었다.

그 중심에는 '루프스케이프(Roofscape)'라는 개념이 있다. 징크 지붕은 개별 건물의 지붕에서 끝나지 않는다. 때로는 떠오르고 때로는 낮게 내려앉으며 건물과 건물 사이를 부드럽게 이어 준다. 지붕은 형태를 만드는 요소를 넘어 사람의 움직임과 공간의 흐름을 연결하는 하나의 풍경이 된다.

건물들은 의도적으로 서로의 거리를 남겨 두었다. 그 틈은 비워진 공간이 아니라 빛과 바람이 머물고 시선이 깊어지는 장소다. 보이드와 중정, 골목 같은 사이 공간은 건축보다 먼저 사람을 맞이하고 걷는 속도를 조금 늦추게 한다. 헤이리 특유의 여유로운 분위기도 이 작은 틈에서 시작된다고 생각했다.

프로젝트의 중심에는 넓은 계단과 광장이 있다. 사람들이 앉고, 만나고, 공연을 보고 잠시 머무는 공간이다. 이 계단은 위아래를 연결하는 시설이 아니라 사람과 사람이 관계를 만드는 무대가 되었고 그곳에서 'THE STEP'이라는 이름도 자연스럽게 탄생했다.

헤이리 더 스텝은 건축의 형태보다 건축 사이의 관계를 먼저 생각한 프로젝트다. 건물과 풍경, 이동과 머무름, 예술과 일상이 하나의 리듬 안에서 이어질 때 비로소 좋은 마을이 만들어진다고 믿었다.

Heyri The Step is a mixed-use development that brings together four separate sites within Heyri Art Village into one continuous architectural composition. Rather than focusing on individual buildings, the project was conceived as an effort to reconnect fragmented places into a unified village experience.

Heyri has always been shaped by the collaboration of artists and architects. In such a setting, architecture should not seek attention for itself, but should instead strengthen its relationship with the surrounding landscape and community. Each building was therefore designed to retain its own identity while contributing to a larger architectural whole.

At the heart of the project is the idea of a "Roofscape." The zinc roof extends beyond individual buildings, rising and falling as it moves across the site. More than a roof, it becomes a continuous landscape that connects architecture, open space, and pedestrian movement into one spatial experience.

The buildings are intentionally separated rather than tightly assembled. These spaces between them are not residual gaps but carefully shaped places where light, wind, and views naturally gather. Courtyards, voids, and pedestrian passages slow the pace of movement, encouraging visitors to pause and experience the relaxed atmosphere that defines Heyri.

At the center of the development lies a generous staircase leading to the main plaza. More than a means of circulation, it functions as a place where people sit, meet, watch performances, and spend time together. It was from this central gathering space that the name "The Step" naturally emerged.

Heyri The Step is ultimately less about the expression of individual buildings than about the relationships between them. The project explores how architecture, landscape, movement, and everyday life can come together to create a place where people naturally gather and remain.
