유타몰은 성신여대입구역 앞에 자리한 상업시설 리디자인 프로젝트다. 대규모 신축이 아니라 기존 건물을 어떻게 다시 도시의 중심으로 되돌릴 것인가에 대한 고민에서 시작되었다.

프로젝트의 조건은 분명했다. 예산은 제한적이었고 구조를 크게 바꾸기도 어려웠다. 그렇다면 무엇이 도시의 인상을 바꿀 수 있을까. 우리는 건축의 표면에 주목했다. 건물의 외피는 단순한 마감이 아니라, 도시가 가장 먼저 읽는 얼굴이라고 생각했다.

그래서 입면을 하나의 거대한 스킨으로 다시 설계했다. 서로 다른 패턴의 펀칭메탈 패널을 사선으로 겹쳐 건물 전체를 감싸도록 구성했다. 마치 하나의 천을 두른 듯한 이 스킨은 시간과 날씨, 보는 위치에 따라 전혀 다른 표정을 만들어낸다. 빛은 패널 사이를 통과하고 그림자는 입면 위를 천천히 이동한다. 평범했던 건물은 움직이지 않지만 도시는 그 앞에서 계속 변한다.

이 프로젝트에서 중요한 것은 화려한 형태가 아니었다. 제한된 조건 안에서도 건축은 도시의 분위기를 바꿀 수 있다는 가능성이었다. 작은 변화가 거리의 인상을 바꾸고 익숙한 풍경에 새로운 긴장감을 만든다고 믿었다.

유타몰은 상업시설의 외관을 새롭게 디자인한 프로젝트이면서 동시에 건축의 표면이 도시와 어떻게 관계를 맺을 수 있는지를 보여준 실험이기도 하다. 건물 하나의 변화가 거리 전체의 풍경을 다시 읽게 만들 수 있다는 사실을 확인한 작업이었다.

Yuta Mall is the redesign of an existing commercial building located near Sungshin Women's University Station in northern Seoul. Rather than replacing the building, the project asked a different question: How can an existing building regain its presence within the city?

The constraints were clear. The budget was limited, and major structural interventions were not feasible. Instead of changing the building itself, Y GROUP focused on transforming its architectural skin, believing that the façade is the first layer through which a city recognizes architecture.

The building was wrapped with diagonally layered perforated metal panels of varying patterns, creating a continuous architectural envelope. Like a piece of fabric draped around the structure, the façade continuously changes its appearance through shifting light, shadow, weather, and perspective. The building itself remains still, yet its relationship with the city constantly evolves.

The project was never about creating an extravagant form. It was about demonstrating how architecture can reshape the atmosphere of a city even within significant constraints. Sometimes a carefully considered surface is enough to transform the way an entire street is perceived.

Yuta Mall became more than the renovation of a commercial façade. It explored how architectural skin can redefine urban identity, proving that even a modest intervention can generate a new visual energy within the city.
