유원재를 완성한 뒤 한 가지 질문이 남았다. 유원재의 철학은 수직으로도 이어질 수 있을까. 유원재는 낮은 담장과 정원, 한옥의 공간 질서에서 출발했다. 반면 유원재 2는 타워형 호텔이다. 전혀 다른 건축처럼 보이지만 우리가 지키고 싶었던 것은 형태가 아니라 머무는 방식이었다. 높은 곳에서도 사람은 자연과 가까워질 수 있을까. 그 질문이 이 프로젝트의 시작이었다.

객실마다 깊은 테라스와 넓은 발코니를 계획했다. 산과 하늘, 계곡의 풍경이 객실 안으로 자연스럽게 이어지도록 했다. 조망을 바라보는 호텔보다 풍경 속에 머무는 호텔을 만들고 싶었다. 건물의 하부는 아치형 보이드와 필로티로 열어두었다. 사람과 바람이 자유롭게 드나들고 도시와 자연이 부드럽게 연결되는 공간이다. 상부는 반복되는 곡선으로 계획했다. 수안보 온천수가 흐르듯 부드럽고 느린 리듬을 건축에 담고 싶었다.

최상층에는 프라이빗 스파와 라운지를 두었다. 높은 곳에서 바라보는 풍경은 전망이 아니라 휴식이 되어야 한다고 생각했다. 유원재 2는 새로운 호텔을 제안하는 프로젝트가 아니다. 유원재가 품고 있던 휴식의 철학을 또 다른 건축 언어로 이어가는 작업이다. 건축은 달라질 수 있다. 하지만 사람이 쉬는 방식은 크게 달라지지 않는다. 우리는 그 변하지 않는 시간을 위한 건축을 그리고자 했다.

Could the philosophy of Youwonjae continue in a vertical form? The original Youwonjae was shaped by gardens, low walls, and the spatial order of traditional Korean architecture. Youwonjae II is a tower hotel. The architecture is different, but the idea of rest remains the same. The project began with a simple thought. Can people still feel close to nature while staying high above the ground?

Each guest room is designed with generous terraces and deep balconies that draw the surrounding mountains, valleys, and sky into everyday living. The intention was never to create a hotel defined by its views. It was to create a place where people feel immersed in the landscape. The lower levels remain open through a series of arches and pilotis, allowing people, wind, and the surrounding environment to move naturally through the site. Above, gently curved forms establish a quiet rhythm inspired by the flowing character of Suanbo's hot springs.

The uppermost level is planned as a private spa and lounge overlooking the surrounding mountains. Here, height is not about spectacle. It is about stillness. Youwonjae II does not abandon the philosophy of the original Youwonjae. It continues the same idea through a different architectural language. Architecture may change its form. The way people seek rest rarely does. That enduring idea became the foundation of this project.
