하얏트 호텔 양양(온해정)은 동해의 수평선과 설악산 자락의 풍경을 함께 담고 있는 리조트이다. 이름 그대로 ‘바다 위에 떠 있는 정자’를 의미한다. 그러나 이 프로젝트의 출발점은 건축의 형태보다 한 가지 질문에 가까웠다. 왜 사람들이 이곳까지 와야 하는가. 양양은 바다와 산, 호수가 만나는 드문 자연환경을 갖고 있다. 하지만 좋은 풍경만으로는 좋은 리조트가 완성되지 않는다. 결국 중요한 것은 그 풍경을 어떻게 경험하게 할 것인가였다. 그래서 설계는 건축을 드러내기보다 풍경을 담아내는 방식에서 출발했다.

객실과 공용공간, 온천 시설은 모두 동해의 풍경을 중심으로 배치되었다. 계절과 시간에 따라 변화하는 바다와 하늘, 그리고 설악산의 능선이 건축 안으로 자연스럽게 스며들도록 계획했다. 리조트는 두 개의 객실동인 Tower On과 Tower Hae, 그리고 독립된 프라이빗 빌라 Villa Jeong으로 구성된다. 각각의 건물은 서로 다른 방향으로 풍경을 담아내며, 방문자는 머무는 위치에 따라 서로 다른 자연의 표정을 경험하게 된다.

단지 중심에는 Glass Pavilion이 자리한다. 수면 위에 가볍게 떠 있는 듯한 이 건물은 로비와 라운지, 다이닝 공간을 담고 있으며 리조트 전체를 연결하는 중심 공간이다. 실내와 외부의 경계를 최소화해 풍경 자체가 건축의 일부가 되도록 했다. 온천 역시 중요한 계획 요소였다. 우리는 온천을 단순한 부대시설로 생각하지 않았다. 풍경을 바라보며 머무는 또 하나의 공간으로 계획했다. 자연과 휴식, 건축이 하나의 경험으로 이어지도록 하는 것이 중요했다.

이 프로젝트는 단순히 아름다운 리조트를 만드는 일이 아니었다. 양양이라는 장소가 가진 가능성을 어떻게 리조트 상품으로 구현할 것인가에 대한 고민이기도 했다. 풍경은 이미 존재했다. 건축의 역할은 그것을 더욱 깊이 경험하게 하는 것이었다.

이러한 장소성과 설계 개념은 글로벌 호텔 브랜드 하얏트의 공감을 얻었고, 최종적으로 Destination by Hyatt 브랜드로 운영되는 프로젝트로 이어졌다. 온해정은 건축이 풍경의 주인공이 되기보다, 풍경을 더욱 돋보이게 하는 배경이 될 수 있는가에 대한 하나의 답이다.

Yangyang, Korea

Onhaejeong is a resort shaped by one of the most remarkable landscapes on Korea's east coast, where the horizon of the East Sea meets the ridges of Seoraksan Mountain. The name Onhaejeong refers to a pavilion floating above the sea. Yet the project did not begin with architecture itself. It began with a simple question: Why would people choose to come here? Yangyang possesses an extraordinary natural setting where sea, lake, and mountain converge. But a beautiful landscape alone does not create a memorable destination. The real challenge was to transform that landscape into an experience people would actively seek out. The design therefore began not with architectural form, but with the landscape itself.

Guest rooms, public spaces, and hot spring facilities were all positioned to frame views of the sea, the sky, and the surrounding mountains. The changing character of nature—through the seasons, weather, and time of day—became an integral part of the architectural experience. The resort consists of two guestroom towers, Tower On and Tower Hae, together with four private villas known as Villa Jeong. Each building is oriented differently, allowing guests to experience the landscape from multiple perspectives and in different ways.

At the heart of the development stands the Glass Pavilion. Appearing to float lightly above water, the pavilion accommodates the lobby, lounge, and dining facilities while serving as the central gathering space of the resort. By minimizing the boundary between interior and exterior, the building allows the landscape itself to become part of the architecture. The hot spring facilities were considered equally important. Rather than treating them as supporting amenities, we conceived them as places of pause and contemplation—spaces where architecture, nature, and relaxation merge into a single experience.

This project was never simply about creating a beautiful resort. It was also an exploration of how the unique qualities of Yangyang could be transformed into a compelling hospitality destination. The landscape already existed. The role of architecture was to help people experience it more deeply.

This approach to place-making and hospitality ultimately resonated with Hyatt Hotels Corporation, leading to the project's selection as a Destination by Hyatt property. Onhaejeong is an exploration of whether architecture can step back from the foreground and allow the landscape itself to become the true protagonist.
