서머셋 팰리스 서울은 광화문에 위치한 서비스 레지던스로, 장기 체류 외국인을 위한 도심형 숙박시설이다. 와이그룹은 기존 건물의 외관을 새롭게 재구성하며 도시 안에서 오래 머무는 사람들에게 안정감과 신뢰를 주는 건축을 만들고자 했다.

호텔은 여행자를 위한 공간이지만 서비스 레지던스는 일상을 담는 공간이다. 며칠을 머무는 것이 아니라 몇 달을 살아가는 건축은 화려함보다 익숙함이 먼저 필요하다. 이번 프로젝트는 이러한 차이를 건축의 표정으로 풀어내는 작업이었다.

입면은 서양 고전건축이 지닌 비례와 질서를 현대적으로 해석하는 데서 출발했다. 장식적인 요소를 강조하기보다 균형 잡힌 창의 비례와 깊이감 있는 입면 구성을 통해 차분한 도시적 풍경을 만들고자 했다. 광화문이라는 서울의 중심에서도 지나치게 자신을 드러내기보다 시간이 지나도 자연스럽게 도시에 스며드는 건축을 목표로 했다.

장기 체류 외국인에게 익숙한 도시 호텔의 분위기와 서울이라는 장소성이 조화를 이루도록 계획한 것도 중요한 과제였다. 건축은 새로운 이미지를 만드는 일보다 처음 방문한 사람에게도 편안함을 느끼게 하는 일이 더 중요하다고 생각했다.

서머셋 팰리스 서울은 외관을 새롭게 디자인하는 작업을 넘어 도시형 서비스 레지던스가 가져야 할 안정감과 품격을 건축적으로 다시 다듬은 프로젝트다.

Somerset Palace Seoul is a serviced residence located in the heart of Gwanghwamun, designed primarily for long-term international residents. Y GROUP was commissioned to redesign the building's exterior, with the intention of creating an architecture that conveys quiet confidence, familiarity, and permanence within the city.

A hotel is a place for travelers. A serviced residence is a place for everyday life. Architecture intended for months of living requires something different from architecture designed for a few nights of stay. Rather than relying on visual spectacle, it must offer a sense of ease that gradually becomes familiar over time. This idea became the starting point of the project.

The façade draws inspiration from the proportion and compositional order of classical Western architecture, interpreted through a contemporary architectural language. Instead of emphasizing ornament, the design relies on balanced proportions, carefully articulated window rhythms, and a restrained sense of depth to create a calm urban presence. Within the historic context of Gwanghwamun, the building was intended to settle naturally into the city rather than compete for attention.

Another important objective was to create an architectural atmosphere that would feel familiar to international residents while remaining rooted in its Seoul context. We believed that architecture should not simply create a new image, but should make people feel comfortable from the moment they arrive.

More than a façade redesign, Somerset Palace Seoul represents an architectural reinterpretation of what an urban serviced residence should be—a place where permanence, familiarity, and quiet dignity come together.
